Cluster Analysis of Potential Disruptions

This visualization shows who stands to gain — and who risks being pinched — as digital transformation takes root in the built environment professions.

We start by taking all companies in the database and grouping them by disruption thesis, resulting in 27 unique clusters. For every role that the companies inside a thesis-cluster touch, we then analyze whether the thesis expands the agency of the role (blue) or reduces it (magenta).

Each role below shows those two totals and how they compare. Open one to see the itemized thesis-clusters.

The shape of the clusters

Both charts rank the same 27 clusters, largest first. The left is how many companies carry each one — a steady decay from 25 to 5, with no dominant few. The right is how many of the six professions each reaches: 12 touch a single profession and one reaches all 4. Hover any point for the thesis behind it.

Methodology

This is an experimental visualization relying heavily on black-boxed interpretation by Claude Opus 5.1. Thesis-clusters and the valence of theses within each profession are determined with only high-level framing provided to the model.

Mapping Dossiers to Professions. A company is in a profession's bucket when that profession's taxonomy value appears among its dossier's buyers OR among its disruption targets — a union, so a company that sells to architects and one that absorbs an architect's work are both evidence about “Architecture firms” in this visualization. The sets are: Government = Government; Real Estate Developers = Asset Owner/Investor, Real Estate; Architecture/Design Firms = Architecture/Design; Engineering Firms = Engineering; Construction Firms = Construction; Property Management = Property Management/Operations. Real Estate Developers additionally drops every company tagged Asset Class: Single-Family. Of 245 companies in the database, 209 land in at least one thesis; the rest either fall outside all six professions or cluster with too few others to survive (cluster minimum=5 companies).

Valence. Each surviving thesis is scored once per profession as expanding or reducing scope and/or demand for that profession. Because the call is made per profession, a single thesis can expand one role while reducing another. For instance, a “same corridor study becoming a subscription” widens what a transport agency does for itself and narrows what a civil engineering consultancy can sell.
